Tossup

Four employees of the Michigan-based healthcare firm Weyco have lost their jobs after refusing to be drug-tested – for nicotine. Weyco has introduced a non-smoking policy that extends even away from the workplace.

This poses an interesting dilemma, pitting one good thing (smoking cessation) against another good thing (employees’ rights). Supposedly it’s stood up to challenges in court.

I wonder if we could flip things around and extend this kind of thinking to workplace hazards under the employer's control. . . .
